In case you've been living in a cave and, therefore, have never enjoyed the Dr. Susan Block show, a bit of introduction might be in order. Block's shows are a saucy melange of education and titillation, featuring not only what you might expect from a Sex Doctor -- sex advice. anatomical information, educational content -- but some things you might not -- a history lesson here, a masturbation session there, and plenty of porn stars frolicking amid Block's own brand of political discussion and spiritual celebration.

I had the pleasure to enjoy two episodes of this excellent show, and it's safe to say that neither one is quite like anything I'd ever seen before.

Dr. Susan Block's Weimar Love is a randy history lesson coupled with more erotic hijinks than you can shake a knockwurst at. The show is themed around Berlin in the 1920s, when post-WWI Germany was called the Weimar Republic, and a spirit of sexual decadence, exploration, celebration and inquiry dominated the culture.

Block brings along Mel Gordon, a professor of Theater at UC Berkeley and author of a fantastic book on the sexuality of the Weimar era. She and Gordon discuss such Germanic wonderfulness as Magnus Hirschfeld, founder of Berlin's Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (Institute for Sexual Research) -- which you've already seen a picture of, since it's the star in the most famous picture of book-burning picture from the Nazi era. That's right, Hirschfeld's Institut was the first place to go when old Adolf and his cronies took over. The Weimar era was a period of extraordinary liberation around sex, and Gordon -- one of the world's experts on the topic -- and Block -- who knows a thing or two about sexual liberation, herself -- go at it with gusto.

But the Dr. Susan Block show isn't some dry history lesson -- they break out one of Hirschfeld's pet projects, a sex machine that puts even Timothy Archibald's most decadent entrepreneurs to shame. We get to see a live demonstration of this Nordic Sexbot, courtesy of porn star Teri Weigel. (Don't worry -- Dr. Suzy gets on -- and off -- a little later in the program).

After the sex-machine interlude, and a break for listeners to call in and get some of Dr. Suzy's spot-on sex advice -- there's more yummy frolicking with delicious guests Mika Tan (who smokes a cigar with her pussy, offering definitive proof that the Weimar arts are alive and well) and Monique DeMoan, who shows Dr. Suzy exactly how she got her stage name.

Block's enthusiasm for her topic is beyond infectious, and it's almost impossible to watch the show without enjoying her celebratory attitude. But lest we forget how the Weimar Republic ended, Dr. Suzy reminds us, and entreaties us to remember that the sexual liberation we enjoy today is no more politically sacrosanct than that of the Weimar adventurers.

With just the right mix of over-the-top entertainment and serious alt-culture history, Weimar Love is a clever look at the dirty side of history -- as lovable as it is edifying.
