If you're in the know when it comes to dark, atmospheric fetish erotica, then you probably already know Carlos Batts. His photography is well known among the feterati, from the stylish pinups of Wild Skin and Crazy Sexy Hollywood to the gothic collages of American Gothic. He's also a videographer, with his recent Alter Ego a collection of erotic video vignettes showcasing the sexy FattyD, aka April Flores. Already an experienced commercial videographer, Batts is now leaping with both feet into the world of independent video production. His three new titles, The Exhibitionist, Crazy Sex, and American Gothic, kept me occupied for a sexy, bewitching and mind-bending afternoon. The Exhibitionist stars Celeste, Christa Faust, Jayla and Patricia as the long-distance fixation of voyeur Brett Rockman. The setup is simple: Rockman is watching while Faust and her playthings tease and taunt him from afar. The film starts with a show tease as Rockman watches gorgeous domme Faust posing in a window, tempting him. That blends seamlessly into Faust's scene with delicious Celeste. Faust informs her that she's nothing but a fantasy, performing for the nameless voyeur. Celeste complies, turning herself into the perfect fantasy as she masturbates on a bed while Faust watches. Then Christa straps one on and fucks Celeste vigorously -- this is some of the best strap-on play I've ever seen.
For the DVD's final segment, Jayla returns, making good on her earlier taunting by getting busy with Rockman and taking him all the way -- first orally, then in a slow, powerful fuck that takes the video well into hardcore status. It's a rousingly effective finish thanks to the long, teasing build-up. Fans of voyeurism, teasing, female pleasure, bondage or just plain hot chicks will love The Exhibitionist.
Starting out with a very kinky scene in a mechanical workshop with the female bottom, Gia Regency, bandage-clad and blindfolded, it then throbs through over two hours of intensely impressionistic images, without a traditional narrative but with the recurring characters, visuals and sexual obsessions providing the unifying themes.
There's enough teasing, taunting and dark erotic menace to lend Crazy Sex an intensely dangerous edge, made that much more intense by the fact that it combines hardcore bondage, spanking and flogging with explicit sex. Crazy Sex has already drawn comparisons to JG Ballard, Jan Svankmeyer, Marilyn Manson and low-budget sci-fi movies. But it's more than just an experimental freakout; the juxtaposition of images is as interesting as it is jarring, and prurient interest abounds. Effortlessly mingling the gothic with the vulgar with the beautifully obscene, Crazy Sex is as goth as it gets, a dark erotic menagerie that goes, esthetically speaking, where neither fetish erotica nor hardcore porn have ever gone.
Last, but far from least, American Gothic is a short experimental horror film that draws its inspiration from the classic painting that spawned Batts' book of the same name. Batts imagined that the night before the Grant Wood's rendition of what would become his classic 1930 painting American Gothic. He is, therefore, trapped in his panting ever. His daughter, a spinster, descends into multiple personality disorder. Ultimately, this collection of images with its experimental approach to narrative prove as arresting as the fetish indulgence of Crazy Sex or the traditional erotica of The Exhibitionist. The exception is that there's no explicitly erotic element here; nonetheless, the textures and Batts' visual sensuality make it a lovely treat for fans of extreme and experimental horror. Also included are three of Batts' other short films: "Puppadere," "Choke," and "Clone," each of which features Batts' introduction. "Puppadere" grew out of Batts' obsession with dead animals; "Choke" is the straightedge Batts' 1993 PSA against smoking -- no joke! -- and "Clone" grew from Batts' interest in using text, sound and images together. If I'd harbored any doubt that Batts is one of the most talented visual artists out there, I lost them somewhere in the milk-and-rose twin bath in Crazy Sex. If you're the type of kink fan who looks for the edge, you've found it -- Batts is working without a net, and the results are wickedly satisfying. Both The Exhibitionist and Crazy Sex can be purchased from Carlos Batts' website. American Gothic can be purchased at Amazon.com.
