On August 17th, San Francisco will celebrate the 11th Annual SF Drag King contest, brought to the legendary DNA Lounge by DragStrip Productions. This is the largest drag king event in the United States; the SF Weekly called it "A parade of gender-bending eye candy." Further described as "an outlandish celebration of sex, drag and rock 'n' roll," it'll soothe your savage beast and bring out the animal in you -- this time 'round, the SFDKC is benefiting PAWS (Pets are Wonderful Support), an organization that facilitates pet care for low-income SF residents suffering from HIV/AIDS and other disabling illnesses.
This event will be presided over by "the Dragtastic Duo of Fudgie Frottage, 'The Man with The Biggest Balls in Show Business,' and Rusty Hips, holder of every San Francisco Drag King title." The event will also showcase the talents of Jay Walker (winner of the 2005 Solo King Category), The Momma's Boyz (the 2005 dance troupe winner), interpretive dancing nerd Howie Weenis, and gender illusionist Arty Fishal. You can also expect to be rocked hard by Pepperspray, described as "a combination of The Spice Girls and The Sex Pistols," by the San Francisco Examiner.
There will be wrestlers, contortionists, Elvis, Prince and Billy Idol Impersonators, rappers, dandies, pimps, leather daddies, hillbillies, homo-erotic jocks, clowns, and their female counterparts. It's a mind-boggling, dress-to-impress occasion, where part of the fun is just trying tell the performers and audience members apart." The contestants at SFDKC will be judged on "talent, creativity, studliness, sex appeal, originality, humor, make-up/facial hair and fashion." The panel of celebrity judges include Shelly Mars, aka Martin, "The Grand Daddy of Drag Kings" and Lynn Breedlove, lead singer of legendary band Tribe 8.
Whether you're tainted, untainted, or somewhere in between, you'll want to follow the dress code for the event: D-R-A-G. Ladies and gentlemen (and the rest of you), we're talking kings, queens, faux, fetish, formal, femme, festive -- and freaky. Sponsored by Vixen Creations, Buck Angel, Glama-Rama, Black & Blue Tattoo, Blavod/Extreme Spirits, Good Vibrations, Costumes on Haight, Mr. S Leather, and Pretzel's Yoga, among others, this night promises to add to the legend of the SF Drag King Contest. You definitely won't want to miss it.
