Kelly Lind is one of the best photographers out there. His impact on the fetish and erotica fields is undeniable; not only is his work all but ubiquitous, but his influence is seen far and wide in the work of other photographers. In the two and a half years since our last profile of Kelly, his website has transformed from KellyLind.com to ErotiqueDigitale, more clearly reflecting his ongoing collaboration with his working and life partner, makeup artist Alex LaMarsh.

Kelly took a break from photographing the most gorgeous women in the world so he could shoot the shit with Eros Zine.

Eros Zine: It's been more than two and a half years since Eros Zine first profiled you -- what have you been up to in that two years? When did you make the switch to ErotiqueDigitale and what faciliated it?

Kelly Lind: I decided to become another porn cliché and move to the San Fernando Valley. We went from working in a 2000 square foot indoor loft to shooting both indoors and outdoors on 7000 square feet of land. The place looks like "Sanford and Son" cause I'm constantly dragging new items home to become part of my photography. I can honestly say that photography comes a distant second to dumpster diving. There's something altogether limiting and freeing when you forego the use of currency and simply create something from nothing. A feeling solidified and validated by the honor I received when my images were chosen for the cover of both Skin Two #53 and Buckle Magazine #2. Each of the sets created for those shoots were once 6 feet deep inside a dumpster.

It's amazing what a change of location can do. Alex and I became closer than ever and in doing so I realized our site, KellyLind.com, didn't accurately represent the partnership we have.

ErotiqueDigitale.com launched in March of 2005. The name change also brought about a new site design and completely new member's area featuring three times the number of photos, double the videos, and all the features the big porn guys tout. From there we redesigned all of the model's paysites that we run, ArielX.com, DanaDeArmond.com, and we'll soon be launching XanthiaDoll.com.

Beyond all the erotica, Alex and I now regularly shoot for commercial and fashion projects. We regularly test fashion models from one of the biggest fashion agencies in Los Angeles.

Eros Zine: You said in that 2004 profile that you'd hired a full time employee to handle the website duties, Rob Vicchuillo. How has that gone? Are you still a self-described "control freak" when it comes to your sites, or has it grown into a web empire where you get to sit behind a big desk and smoke cigars all day?

Kelly Lind: Rob is a good friend of mine. And although he now makes big money as a network admin he still finds time to maintain and develop our sites. He's at all our big shoots, lending a hand, which prompted him to take up photography as well.

I'm still a control freak. I don't think there's any changing that. But the sites are now fully automated so I don't have to hold on so tight. I can step away, shoot more, and hopefully with the launch of our new affiliate program, AltPornCash.com, I'll have even more time to pursue other interests. And for the record, cigars aren't an option for me. I've never smoked, used drugs, or consumed any alcohol. I celebrate by playing with my dog in the backyard, going out for a nice meal, or possibly making violent love to my girlfriend.

Eros Zine: You said in your 2004 interview that you find a lot of inspiration in the "beautifully tragic" (including the area in downtown LA where you then lived and worked) and you've copped to creating "dark erotica" but wanting to communicate the idea that sex is fun. How does that work for you -- being interested in the dark side of experience but also wanting to counter negative messages about sex?

Kelly Lind: Its schizophrenic. But I've always been that way. I hold an equal interest in both good and bad. To commemorate our first year together, Alex took me to get my hands tattooed. The word "Truth" on the right, "Fiction" on the left, which is indicative of my personality and the way I view the world. It manifests itself in my photography as well, both hands on my camera, balancing aspects of a sober reality with the lure of surreal fantasy. The deeper I find myself in this supposedly "sex positive" community the more I realize there's virtually no one here that has a healthy sex life. Almost all are acting out on some previous trespass. The statement I wish to make with my work is that sex is a beautiful and fragile thing. It should not be mistreated. Its not something that should be offered to anyone who crosses your path. Its not a tool used to make you feel better about yourself. It's a piece of your soul that's invaluable. Enjoy your kink, god knows I do, but do it responsibility. Want sex, never need it. I shoulda become a preacher.

Eros Zine: You've done some shooting at fetish events. What's that experience like? Do you like shooting events, or do you prefer to work in the studio?

Kelly Lind: With all due respect, I wouldn't even consider event photography to be a form of photography. Event photography is a hand shake, studio photography is a deep, day long conversation. It's a step above an insurance salesman taking a photo of your car for their records. I'll leave that to folks with no talent like Jody Cortes.

Eros Zine: You've also mentioned that you've done some work in story-driven video erotica -- any desire to go back to that realm? Are we likely to see an ErotiqueDigitale DVD on the shelves at Blockbuster any time soon?

Kelly Lind: There's no doubt, ErotiqueDigitale will be in full motion and on shelves in 2007. My intention was never to become a full time still photographer. I took up the medium in order to learn more about lighting, become better at directing, and make the right contacts. I've accomplished what I set out to do and I've already begun shooting my first full length feature.

Eros Zine: You recently shot Joanna Angel as a "bad girl gone good." What inspired you to want to clean up her naughty image?

Kelly Lind: Transforming women is what I'm about. I love making women look their best. Although Joanna has been photographed beautifully in the past by many, I had not yet come across an image that showed her pure side. I always want to do the unexpected. While the other photographers are worried about how many holes they can fill I think about how I can make her look her best. She's funny, smart, and goddamned adorable, I hold those qualities in high regard, so I put her on a pedestal, where she belongs.

Eros Zine: Other models who appear most often on your site include Ariel X, Darenzia, Dana DeArmond, Candi Diaz, Kyli Ryan, Mimi, Scar, Kumi and others. What makes a model a favorite of yours to work with? Barring that, what makes her get asked back?

Kelly Lind: I enjoy working with different women for different reasons. Having said that, there are some common traits all my favorites have. They're all women who at least appear to take reasonably good care of their bodies. They all take direction well. And they're all capable of giving and receiving respect. It's becoming more and more difficult to find models that meet my standards. I'm far more demanding of my models than I once was. My photography has become a game of millimeters instead of feet. Whatever status I might have in the scene is now turning against me as women are sometimes paralyzed in front of me, or so nervous that they can't stop visibly shaking. I'm a pretty laid back person but my patience is growing thin and it won't be long before I accept nothing less than the best.

Eros Zine: What do you think of that guy who runs FetishGossip.com? MAN, he has some nasty things to say, huh? He ever pick on you? He tried that shit with me, I'd open up a can of whoop ass myself, I tell you what.

Kelly Lind: He's a complete asshole. America is supposed to be a place of, not just tolerance, but acceptance. What separates Joe from your everyday hatemonger is that he respects everyone else's right to be who they want to be. He just wants to be treated with the same respect. If Joe didn't exist, Kelly woulda been institutionalized a long time ago.

Eros Zine: Speaking of which, what do you think of the fetish scene in general? Has it gotten more or less self-indulgent in the years you've been a playa?

Kelly Lind: I don't believe it's become less or more indulgent. I do know it's changed. I brought about some healthy competition. I sit back and watch as a photographer who I've openly mocked slowly starts tightening up his game. It's a good feeling to know that I have an effect on what the community produces. I hope I can continue to improve as well as inspire improvement amongst my peers.

Eros Zine: Any chance there will be a Kelly Lind / ErotiqueDigitale coffee table book in the near future?

Kelly Lind: My work was accepted over a year ago by a well known publisher. The problem that I've run into is my own perfectionism. I learn something new every time I shoot. Compiling old images into a book requires me to confront my mistakes head on. That's extremely difficult for me to do. I'm still that kid that patiently waited years for the new Red Hot Chili Pepper's album, One Hot Minute to come out. Skated to my local record store the day it was released. Got home and listened to it only to discover it sucked. A disappoint I don't want anyone to have to go through. The Chili Peppers will always be infallible in my eyes, but it did put a scratch in the finish. I want each release to be something I'm truly proud of. I need to know that whatever I put out could not have been done any better.
